About Portage

In 1912 THE PORTAGE became a fulltime guesthouse and by the 1920s it had become a place for younger people and families, as well as an important social centre for locals.

A rich history of family holidays, honeymoons and weekend escapes followed, many people returning year after year to enjoy the relaxed lifestyle.

Beatrice Gullery married Ernie Laurence and the next generation managed the guesthouse until 1955 when it was sold as the Portage Hotel. The Hotel had series of owners until Graham and Thelma Cains bought the property in 1980.
