Maori History

The Maori used the sounds as shelter from bad weather and to gather of the rich food sources.

The area around THE PORTAGE was used as a camp to fish for snapper – after carrying their waka (canoes) over the hill from Queen Charlotte Sound to Kenepuru Sound.
